Disabled access ramps and accessibility in everyday life

For many people with disabilities, even small differences in level can be a significant barrier in everyday life. A single step at the front door, uneven paving stones, narrow passages, or the absence of a landing can make it difficult or even impossible to move safely using a wheelchair, walker, or other mobility aids.

Good accessibility is therefore about more than simply being able to get through a door. It is about being able to move around safely, independently, and with dignity in private homes, housing associations, public buildings, and commercial properties.

At Excellent Systems, we work with solutions that improve accessibility where challenges arise at entrances, outdoor areas, door thresholds, shower areas, shop entrances, and similar locations. These solutions may include ramps, tile mats, and landings that help create safer, slip-resistant, and more practical access routes both indoors and outdoors.

What accessibility challenges might people experience?

People with reduced mobility may encounter many different barriers in their surroundings. Some of the most common include:

  • Steps at entrances and doorways

  • High door thresholds between rooms or at terrace doors

  • Edges at shower areas

  • Lack of a landing where it is possible to stop and maneuver safely

  • Steep access routes at buildings, terraces, or pathways

  • Slippery surfaces during rain, frost, or in wet areas

These challenges can affect wheelchair users, people using walkers, those with limited mobility, and others who require additional support in everyday life.

How can disabled access ramps help?

A disabled access ramp can create a smooth transition between two levels and make it easier to pass places where steps or height differences would otherwise be an obstacle. Ramps can be used at main entrances, back entrances, terraces, balconies, pathways, and at internal level changes.

A well-designed ramp can help provide:

  • easier access for wheelchairs and walkers

  • greater independence in everyday life

  • improved safety when entering and leaving buildings

  • fewer lifts and less physical strain for relatives and staff

  • more inclusive access for all users

Landings create safety and better maneuverability

A landing is often an important part of an accessible solution. While a ramp connects different levels, a landing provides space to stop, turn, or change direction safely.

This is particularly important along longer ramp sections, at entrances, and in places where a door needs to be opened while standing securely. A landing can therefore help make access more functional and safer for the user.

Accessibility in both private and public environments

The need for good accessibility can be found in many places. It may be in private homes where a resident experiences reduced mobility. It may be in housing associations that want better access to stairways and shared areas. And it may be in schools, institutions, clinics, shops, and public buildings where accessibility is essential to ensure that everyone can participate on equal terms.

The right solution always depends on the specific conditions: level differences, available space, user needs, and the layout of the surroundings.

Focus on safety and durability

When working with accessibility, safety is essential. Surfaces should be slip-resistant, the construction stable, and the solution adapted for everyday use. This is especially important in areas with heavy traffic or changing weather conditions.

A durable solution should function reliably over time while also being easy to integrate into the existing surroundings.

Better access provides greater freedom

Accessibility is not only a technical solution. It is also a way to create greater freedom, dignity, and participation in everyday life. When access conditions are improved, it becomes easier for people with disabilities to move independently and use buildings and outdoor areas on equal terms with others.

Ramps, tiles, and landings can therefore play an important role in a broader effort to create more inclusive environments.
